Ombrera’s tragic story: Lion skins and bones reduced at Nigeria zoo

At the Gamji Gate Zoo in Kaduna, Nigeria, a man finds a leopard. The king of the jungle slowly moved away from his cage, hungry, in agony, with a sad look on his face. The adult male lion usually weighs about 190 kg, while this specimen also shows bones. The visitor paid for the entrance to the zoo and was stunned for a few minutes to see the lion. So he filmed everything and condemned the incident and contacted an organization for the protection of animals, “wildlife”.
“I was speechless when I saw him, because he thought he was dying – the man says – and I was nervous because I saw a live lion for the first time. I never went to the zoo.” The lion has been called Bubba or Shadow, and Wildlife, working closely with the “Nigerian Association of Zoological Parks”, has pressured local authorities to investigate the case.
Meanwhile, they have sent a veterinarian to the zoo to treat the animal, but it is not yet clear if he will make it. They are waiting for a complete diagnosis as well as an answer to what happened. Bubba is receiving medical treatment and will be taken to a nearby shelter if he survives. “But at the moment the situation is very fragile and we are working with the local authorities – explain from Wildlife – to keep other animals at the zoo from suffering.”

The lion is not the only one at the Kaduna Zoo. Other animals kept at the facility – monkeys, crocodiles and ostriches – have also been found in critical condition and are being cared for by other veterinarians.
Other species have recently been found in a similar condition at the Zinnier Zoo in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso. Forty-six animals, including lions, hippos, hedgehogs, monkeys and hyenas, have been rescued. They were hungry too, and sadly not all of them survived. In this case, the “Foundation for the Protection of Fauna and Flora” intervened and closed the zoo. Animal rights activists hope the Kaduna Zoo will be closed for good.
