The war in Ukraine and the veterinarians (and others) who do not abandon dogs, cats and animals

In a war that kills very young soldiers and kills parents, siblings and children, pets may seem the least of your worries. Yet, from day one, it was clear that the Ukrainians – even under the bomb – had no desire to forget their four-legged friends. As if their care and their company is a testimony to a ‘previous’ life and a hope for what is to come. So stories and images of protected dogs and cats in shelters on the media and social networks have been dragged along with the same care, devoted to the people, being abused by soldiers, even from the rubble. Or, more often than not, to follow the owners, holding them in their arms, carrying them on their shoulders when very old and sick, in a groove for hundreds of kilometers and among the few survivors in the rubble.

In recent stories, Jacob Kostovich, a 32-year-old veterinarian, risked his life to save 260 dogs and cats abandoned in conflict-torn Ukraine. He traveled by car from Poland, where he lives, to bring them to safety: one of the dogs was shot in the spine and even a pygmy goat.

And then the 96-year-old woman who ran with a few clothes and her cat, the street girl immortalized the dog on a rib and two cats in her shoulder bag. Until the soldier who immortalized himself with a large cat in comfort in a huge rocket launcher. There are dozens of appeals on social media to support rescue workers committed to helping thousands of dogs who are no longer homeless. Viral is a picture of three puppies running after them with destruction and fire.

The story of a woman in Irpin yesterday who ran away with her 12 dogs and many foundlings. “My kids have been away for some time already. I was alone with my husband to stay with our dog – he explained to the local media – today we will also leave our city. By taking our four-legged life partner with us and rescuing 12 dogs who lost everything in this battle.
